Harold Peterson in The Man Who Invented Baseball (1969) explained, "Its club retained the name for more than twenty years until - as a result of a freebooting career that saw them buy up most of the Columbus team in 1884, jump the American Association to take over the National League's Kansas City franchise in 1996, and raid the Philadelphia Athletics in 1891 - they began being called 'the Pirates' around the league."
